Montezuma Area Restaurants
In this section I review my personal favorite restaurants in Montezuma. Every year we seem to have a couple new ones, and the quality is improving. Montezuma is blessed with a large Italian community, who have brought their amazing culinary skills with them, and so many of the best restaurants are run by Italianos. Maybe it's just that the air and water are cleaner in Montezuma, but the food here just seems to taste better than anywhere else. Even in Costa Rica's capital city, San Jose, we haven't been able to find restaurants with food this good.
Perhaps there's a secret beyond the Italian community's international reputation for the mastery of all things hedonistic - we have an amazing Italian delicatessan in Cobano, run by an Italian man named Marino, who is importing some of the finest ingredients from Europe - cheeses from France, olive oil from Spain, and Marino even makes his own freshly smoked fish. Whatever the secret, we're grateful to all of Montezuma's amazing chefs.
Beyond the restaurants highlighted here, there are so many other great places to eat in Montezuma, it feels a shame to not recommend them all, but these stand out as the best of the best. One thing for sure, if you vacation in Montezuma for too long, you'll gain weight.

Anamaya Restaurant:
A unique experience in the area... this fabulous restaurant has a new menu every day, and is open to the public only by advance reservations. Guests are invited up to this spectacular boutique resort to enjoy the infinity edge pool at sunset, then the chef prepares a multi-course meal for all the guests, who eat together each night at 7pm at one large table. The food is very gourmet and decadent, yet designed to be ultra-healthy. The chef includes many "superfoods" in each meal to insure optimum health, and guests are invited to watch and learn his cooking secrets. No red meat is served, but guests can choose from local fresh fish, organic chicken, or a veggie or vegan option. Most meals include two or more raw dishes. For a sample of menus, check the website. Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday nights, for $35 per person. Friday nights are $50 because the meal includes a fire dancing and/or silk trapeze show. The Anamaya dining experience is absolutely not to be missed. Call 2642-1289 for reservations 24 hrs in advance. Seating is limited.

Playa de los Artistas:
Considered by many to be the best restaurant in Costa Rica, a dinner at Playa de los Artistas Restaurant is an unforgettable experience, often the highlight of many peoples' vacation in Montezuma. The menu changes every night, so it's worth going back. The restaurant is across the street from Los Mangos hotel, and has a very small sign. It's very easy to miss, and every day, hundreds of tourists no doubt walk right past without realizing they just passed on of the greatest restaurant experiences in the world. I recommend ordering only appetizers, two per person, and ask them to bring them out in "poco a poco". This will give you the widest variety of tastes, and everything will be hot when you eat it. Playa de los Artistas sits right on the beach, and I recommend arriving early enough to see the waves before sunset... so 5:30 is a good time. After that, it's often too dark to see the ocean.

Cafe Organico:
Cafe Organico has become part of Montezuma's core spirit, with its gourmet vegetarian (mostly vegan) dishes of all kinds, from dairy-free ice cream (made with a base of coconut, soy, or avacado), chocolate vegan brownies, breakfast burritos, etc. Owner and chef Ozlem, originally from Turkey, has worked day and night to make Organico a fun place to eat or just to hang out, with her new "organic lounge". This business should be a case study for small business excellence. Ozlem is continuously changing and improving by trying new things, whether it be recipes, decor, or layout, I enjoy seeing the business improving month by month. Currently open for only breakfast and lunch, it's possible that by the time you read this, she will have found a way to serve dinner too. Organico truly serves "pure food with love" as advertised.

Cocolores:
Cocolores is another beachfront restaurant in the center of Montezuma, and is usually packed with tourists that return night after night to try different dishes. With reasonable prices, and a lively atmosphere, Cocolores is very successful. Originally started by Benita, who moved back to Italy recently, its popular menu has been continued and even improved by Mossimo and Florenzia, whose attention to detail shows in every aspect of the restaurant. EVERY dish is exceptionally good at Cocolores, but the crowd-favorite is the "Curry Banano with Fish" (Fish cooked in a banana flavored curry sauce.) I have personally tried, and failed, to duplicate this amazing dish at home. Also, their "filet with porcini mushroom sauce" is the tastiest steak in the area. This is a restaurant that I guarantee will not disappoint you.
