Located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Montezuma is a tiny unassuming town with a large heart. It evolved from a nondescript fishing community into a swanky, youthful and vibrant tourist town that features delectable food, gorgeous beachside accommodations, and all with a fun, buzzing vibe. It has still to witness the larger Costa Rica tourism real estate developments and retains a charming and quaint local feel. Montezuma is remarkably varied with an admirable mix of local Costa Ricans, global travelers and plenty of expats who came here and never felt like going back.Montezuma / Santa Teresa de Malpais is one of the most eclectic vacation retreats in Costa Rica. Known for its alternative, international culture, energetic nightlife, unique shops, and galleries, it is also home to spectacular natural beauty and captivating waterfalls. Beachcombing, hiking, yoga, horseback riding, canopying, ATV riding, boating, snorkeling, scuba diving, bird watching, fishing, people watching, shopping, eating, and just plain relaxing are among the most popular activities.

For couples whose idea of bliss is nice peaceful beaches, surfing, and beautiful looking coastlines, Montezuma has it all. The most popular beach, Playa Grande is a great place for honeymooners to just lie back and sunbath. It is easily walkable from the town center. Playa Las Manchas is another great beach, a good place for couples who are into adventure activities such as snorkeling, and is located at just about a 15 minute walk to the south of the town. The tide pools at Playa Rocas are picturesque and enjoyable as well.
Along the beaches couples will find great little bars and restaurants with the freshest seafood you can imagine. Honeymooners can also rent surfboards, book tours to more cast away beaches, and sign up for thrilling scuba diving lessons together. There are a number of surf camps that teach you the basics of diving but the more seasoned surfers usually go to Playa Los Cedros which is known to feature some of the best swells.
Another romantic idea is to make a day trip to the Isla Tortuga on a luxurious catamaran, where they’ll drop anchor to help you indulge in a delicious and enjoyable picnic and fun-filled day in the sun and sand. You can explore the surrounding areas, hike to a waterfall or combine with a day-trip to the beautiful adjoining towns.
For the green conscious couples and honeymooners, there are plenty of eco-friendly options when it comes to accommodation and in Montezuma. There are a nice number of vegetarian restaurants for the vegetarian/organic food community such as Café Organico. Couples generally prefer coming to Montezuma to relax and to commune with nature through nature hikes, yoga retreats, and spiritual retreats, not to forget the incredible massages and spa/wellness couple treatments being offered by several hotels and resorts in Montezuma.
More on Tortuga Island:
In addition to all this, there is a vibrant and thriving nightlife scene when the small village’s bars and restaurants buzz to life with the beats of the most rhythmic Latin music your ears can be treated to. For couples who love to take in the local flavor of places they visit, there is a Saturday farmers market. This allows you to witness the real, relaxed unruffled lifestyle of the locals who sell fresh organic produce, local handicrafts to the backdrop of musicians and other performers playing for money.
Adventure and spiritually inclined couples can also sign up for a fruitful surf and/or yoga retreat. The fact that unlike other beach towns in Costa Rica, Montezuma features a solid health, wellness and eco oriented community and is not choc-o-bloc with real estate development. Montezuma’s rivers and beaches are pristine and full of unspoiled nature and wildlife, thus acting as a fitting backdrop for yoga and other wellness retreats. You can also enjoy couple yoga classes and feel the positive vibes of spiritualism communing with nature, while blissful togetherness is experienced. Other than yoga, several couple packages includes wellness treatments like a couple massage sessions and other beauty/wellness treatments to rejuvenate your senses and kindle the romantic spirit in you.
Several resorts here allow couples to practice yoga in the open, wooden pavilion overlooking the ocean while listening to the sound of birds, howler monkeys and the ocean waves. Classes are mostly open for all levels and beginners are welcome. Other activities and attractions that can be enjoyed by couples in and around Montezuma include all day boat excursion to Tortuga Island, fishing trip, diving and snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, horseback riding, motorbike for rent, bird watching, ATV for rent, mountain bikes, sport fishing, horseback rides, canopy tours, whale and dolphin watching tours, turtle island tours, trip to the Montezuma Waterfalls.
Montezuma remains one of the most sought after destinations on the coast, and many couples like to stay for at least a week, to enjoy not just the white sandy beaches with crystalline waters but also the nearby nature reserves, like Cabo Blanco National Parks and Curu wildlife reserve, islands, like Tortuga which is the best known in the area, and the famous waterfalls.
My new favorite restaurant, Clandestina is not to be missed by food lovers staying anywhere near to Montezuma. Established in March 2015, Clandestina is the new kid on the block. The Oregon/Tico collaboration is a winner among locals and travelers alike, with artisan craft beers, made onsite by Butterfly Brewing Co. and delicious, exciting […]
